Profile

Elena Marchigiani took the Degree in architecture at the IUAV of Venice, where she earned her Ph.D in Urban Planning in 2000. In 2002 she earned her post Ph.D. at the Polytechnic of Milan on the issues of Planning tools and Policies. She is currently professor at the University of Trieste, at the Master Course of Architecture where she coordinates the Atelier of Urban Planning. She is part of the scientific committee of the inter-university ph.D course in Engineering and Architecture of the Universities of Trieste and Udine.
Between 2011 and 2016, she was Deputy Major at the Municipality of Trieste, first with the powers of Public Works, then with those of Town Planning, Mobility and traffic, Private buildings, Policies of the house and Urban Projects.
From 2011 she is member of the Board of the Italian Society of Town Planners-SIU.
In 2016 and 2017 she was expert for the evaluation, monitoring and implementation of proposals under the H2020 Framework Programme, for the Directorate General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission.
Her core research interests refer to: tools and processes for the design, planning and management of urban territories and landscapes, with a specific focus on urban resilience; urban regeneration (in the frame of environmental, cultural and social sustainability issues), with particular reference to council housing districts; the construction of interactive and participatory processes; the innovation in public action and public policies. She coordinated and took part to many national and EU projects in the fields of sustainable development, education to the values of space, demographic change, enhancement of water and urban landscapes. On these topics she published many critical essays and organized exhibitions and public events.
